Is It Media or Is It Viral?

The phenomena of social media is taking over the blogosphere. The world even. It is a new way of doing things. There is a new sheriff in town with the concept of social media. In many ways I think it is viral. With Youtube and some of the other sites out there, the world seems to catch on and view, post, blogg about, meme, link and promote the item of the day....whatever it is. A video, a link, a post, a news story, a google bomb. Even Good Morning America features a segment on popular Youtube videos that are circulating the web.

Community has taken on a new form. It is not the old networking of the 1980's and 90's to move ahead or even word of mouth. The internet has given community new life. It is all about reching out and clicking someone. After reading the post by Byrtopian I do agree with the characteristics that are listed as some main ones. With the ever changing evolving of the internet, they may be subject to change in the future, but they are a good place to start. The site lists them as:
  • Participation
  • Openness, transparency and disclosure
  • Conversation
  • Community Driven
  • Facilitation (facilitating conversations that are already happening online)

The site does actually go on to explain the 5 distinct characteristics of social media. He has some good points. I know that marketing today and even the presidential campaigning involves the web. Check out the site and read what the points are. The face of media today has changed and I believe it is a work in progress. It must be a hot topic. Bloggers and marketers have been talking about the definition of social media, and whether or not it should be called something different. Come on, jump in. Is It Media or Is It Viral?
