First of This New Year

Where am I?  Still weighing more than I should.  Still not exercising enough and I really need to step it up.  I signed up for the Cooper Rover Bridge Run this year...to walk with a friend and that day will soon be here.  If I do not start walking daily, I will have to cancel out.  I will not be able to make it.

That's bad.  I can do more but now, just not that motivated.  I used to be.  I used to be a gym rat that spent about 2 hours daily at the gym.  Loved every minute of it.  I can see that immobility is a vicious cycle.  If you do not get off the couch, you do not WANT to get off the couch.

I feel  a personal intervention is needed.  I need to do better.  It will be a daily challenge but I need to get the exercise in  daily. I need to shoot for daily because some days due to my work schedule I will  not make it.

I still have a closet full of skinny clothes.  I will not get rid of those.  They are what I will be wearing when I loose the pounds.  I just gotta get off the sofa.  I just gotta!

Watching the Food

Food. Can't live with it and can't live without it.  I have been making a great effort not cut down on the calories and I feel thinner.  Really.  I think it will be just  matter of continued discipline till the pounds begin to come off.  I have made a great effort to cut out all sweets and have just about eliminated all drinks to nothing but water.  I really have to get the weight off. Doctors orders.  The last time I went in to see him was about a month ago.  He suggested I start going to weight watchers but right now I cannot afford it.  You have to pay for that of course.

Me?  I plan to do it the old fashion way.  Eating less and sweating it off. The gym and I think eating only 80% of your food. Stop at 80% no matter what is on your plate and no eating after 8pm.  Everything after that turns to fat.  I will be much slimmer by summer and I want to feel in much better health.  I am finally on the right track!

It is REALLY Happening!

Well, it is really happening now.  I have started going back to the gym. I joined Planet Fitness for that great low price of $10 a month.  I have been going three times a week and have been walking on the treadmill for an hour.  That lets me get in about 3 miles of walking.  So far my legs have felt a little rubbery  but after that I feel just fantastic for the rest of the day.  I do take baths in Epsom salts just in case.  So far no soreness.  Just a feeling of euphoria that I am finally making that lifestyle change that has been so long in the coming.

Granted it did have a catalyst.  About a month or so ago I was sick with  a bad cold and I had to do to the doctor.  He did all the normal things, weigh, blood pressure, temperature.  We discovered for the very first time that my blood pressure was a little high.  He has since put me on some medication and that has reduced it.  So with that  of course he suggested I lose weight.  That something I already knew but it all struck a note that had not been struck before.

I am back on the gym trail. In my 20's and 30's I was a gym rat.  I lived at the gym, was a size 8 and was in perfect shape, not an ounce of fat.  I will return there.  Or as close as I can get.  I am looking forward to wearing some of the clothes that I could never part with.  I kept them...all my small clothes.  I knew I would be returning there...so here I am.  Finally on the track were I want to go.

The Lenten season is upon us and I have even incorporated that into it.  No more sweet snacks at my desk at work during the day.  That was not helping.  So I am staying away from that.

At the gym, I think I will stick with the walking for a while but I would like to advance eventually to the elliptical machines.  Time.  It takes time.  It did not gain all this weight in a day and it will not go away in a day either.  The bad thing is that it goes on quicker than it goes off.  Time will make all the difference!

Naked Soon?

In my closet there are two sets of clothes. The clothes I have had for years when I was much thinner that are classic and timeless that I refuse to get rid of. I have to get skinny to wear then again! I will. Some of them I have had for years..since 1990. They are still good. Like new. Some even still have the tags on them. I look at them often. They take up 3/4 of the closet. They were the clothes I wore before I had a child 17 years ago. They are beautiful!

The other 1/4 of my closet are filled with the few clothes I have now. They are the bigger clothing. I do not like them. Some of them are stylish but they are big. I refuse to get more and now they are wearing out. Seams are coming apart and under arms are getting dark from deodorant and constant washing. Some do not have the same shape. Slowly I have had to get rid of these clothes and now I have very little to wear. I will not buy more. No more big clothes. I have all those little ones to wear. So what have I done.

I am in the frantic race to walk, wog or jog these pounds off. I have to or I will be naked soon. Soon I will have nothing that fits and I refuse to buy any more big clothes. I have all those little ones to wear. I resolve not to be naked soon!

Zumba Craze!

Well. I was unable to sleep a few nights ago and I saw a late night infomercial for Zumba. I had been seeing signs here and there around town but did not really know what it was! Well. I was totally mesmirized by the show. Just watching it made me want to get up and move! I checked out the classes in my area and they are all at gyms. I do not have a membership anywhere not. I used too...so the best option for me would be to order the DVD's.

It looks like a lot of fun and looks like a great way to loose a few pounds! Zumba! Check it out!

Reducing Belly Fat

I have a little mini-me and it is my belly fat. I am waging war with it now. How to get rid of it. I see all the pills and things on the market but I am very hesitant to take anything. It is best to loose it the old fashioned way...sweat it off. On the radio, not to long ago I heard a commentary that the fat is stored in kind of in a mesh pocket of stomach muscles and that over time the only way to reduce that mesh pocket of fat is to work it off. What is the best way? Food? Pills? Targeted stomach exercises? The only way seems to be to expend more calories than you are taking in so that pocket of reserve fat in the mesh pocket will be used up. It sure got there easily and it snuck up on me. Now why is it so hard to get rid of it?

Tips on Losing Belly Fat
  1. Exercize: Get that jelly roll, rolling! Often. No more sitting around on the sofa. Get up and get moving. Join the gym. Walk at least 30 minutes a day. If you fall to temptation and do eat something sweet, then immediately walk for 30 minutes after or get on the stairmaster or eliptical trainer.
  2. Alcohol: Avoid at all costs. Beer in particular has lots of calories and will help grow your beer belly. Other alcohol like margaritis and mixed drinks have all sorts of sweet sugary sodas or heavy creams that are full of sugars, fat and calories
  3. No eating after 8 PM: This is a rule of thumb that works. No eating after 8pm as our bodies do not have time to digest all that food before we go to bed. It all just turns to fat when we go to sleep on a big full stomach of food.
  4. No Junk Food: Junk food is like fuel to belly fat. We are what we eat. If you eat chips you will be a fat potato chip. Avoid junk food at all costs. Switch to fruits and vegatables when you yearn for something weet.
  5. Eat only the Good Carbohydrates: We all need carbs but eat only the good ones. Switch to whole grain breads and avoid white bread. Again stick to fruits and vegetables and then drink them. Use the juicer. You know I am a big fan of mine.
Follow these tips and stick with it and soon that belly fat will be walking out the door. Right now what am I doing? I am getting ready to start the day. I am putting on my shoes and going walking before work. I need to shake up my mini-me. I need to let it know, it has to find another place to live.

Thinner!

Like the novel by Stephen King written under the name of Richard Bachman, I do believe, I am thinner! I got on the scale and I had lost another 5 pounds. I was very motivated this morning. I got up and walked for about 40 minutes. Of course the horrible "lack of circulation itch," was happening. Now I feel all broke up! Lack of excercise and then trying to get back into it will do that to you. I feel good today but I can tell I used muscles that have not been used in a while.

Breakfast was yogurt and granola. Lunch was cottage cheese and melba toast spread with gorganzola cheese spread. Water was and is the drink of the day. Thinner! I like that.

Goal Suit Revisted!

Back on May 5, 2005, I posted that this lovely swin siut was my goal suit. Well. Since that time it has just sat in the drawer. I wonder if the elastic is dry rot. It is STILL my goal suit. It is lovely, so cute and has never been worn. I pulled it out again today and dreamed of strutting my stuff in it on the beach. I then got on the scale. Even thought I was outdone by Little Debbie Cakes earlier today, I lost 5 pounds.

Baptiste Power Yoga

Baptiste Power Yoga is something I have always been intrigued with. I would love to attend one of the yoga boot camps one day. I first became aware of him when one of the ladies from Survivor Africa attended one of his camps when she got back. It was on a Survivor follow up show. I think that I would like to go for a week and hve that be my vacation. I think it would be something I would have to wait about a year to go on. I would have to do a little yoga on my own and build up. Bootcamp does not play.

They say it is much more than a vacation. You will experience a sanctuary for your body and soul. Natural, spontaneous healing and physical transformation can happen when you put your usual habits on hold, and focus on training, meditating and eating to balance and strengthen. the bootcamp yogic process can create a wave of power that courses through your body and your spirit. Now that sounds like a winner for me.

Yoga Booty Ballet

I have been seeing infomercials for Yoga Booty Ballet in the past year. It was more expensive than what the dvd's cost on amazon now. The price is coming down. I might have to get this as well as it has more movement. This makes me believe that it is more aerobic. I need that as well. The movement. I tend to be sedentary now. Check this out. It might be worth it. I have alwasy been a fan of an aerobic class. I remember the days in the 70's and 80's of high impact. That was when i was a spa member///gym members in those days and spandex was all the rage. I still have lots of spandex workout suits from that era. To me, they never go out of style. Like disco. Disco lives forever and so does all my spandex workout suits with matching headbands. Now if I could only find my missing legwarmers!

Benefits of Yoga

AS I begin the yoga avenue, I wanted to see exactly what the benefits were of doing it. There are many and here are just a few.
  • Increasing Flexibility – yoga has positions that limber the various joints of the body
  • Massaging of ALL Organs of the Body – Yoga is perhaps the only form of activity which massages all the internal glands and organs of the body
  • Excellent toning of the muscles – Muscles that have become flaccid, weak or slothy are stimulated repeatedly to shed excess flab and flaccidity.
  • Detoxification – By gently stretching muscles and joints as well as massaging the various organs, yoga ensures the optimum blood supply to various parts of the body. This helps in the flushing out of toxins.
  • Reduced Stress: Yoga, which derives its name from the word, “yoke”—to bring together—does just that, bringing together the mind, body and spirit.
  • Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons – likewise, the well-researched yoga positions exercise the different tendons and ligaments of the body

Clothes of All Sizes

Because I am the largest I have ever been, I never got rid of my clothes in smaller sizes. I kept them all hoping to be able to get back into them. Well, I am well on my way. I will literally have a wardrobe of clothes that most will not remember as I have not worn them in a while. They are all classic things so I cannot wait. I will be styling and profiling. I have very nice clothes. Even now, I have very nice clothes. I do think that I will get rid of all my bigger clothes. I will either sell them on EBAY or if I really like something, I will have it altered.

Things Hanging

I tried on a suit that I ahd not worn in about 6 months as it is for fall or more for winter. It was too big. It really has to be taken in. I also wore to work a green sweater that is too big as well. I did not realize that it looked too big until a trip to the ladies room. The shoulder strap of the sweater did not seem to fit anymore and my bra strap kept showing. I was having to adjust it all day. I thought it was because the sweater was 2 years old and kind of stretched out. No. It was because it is too big now. That is a good thing. A very good thing. I have not been on the scale. I will have to get on to see exactly what I weigh. I have not been on the scale in about 2 months.

Itch Not Scratched

Man, I just had a craving for something sweet. I had that same craving earlier tonight and decided to drink a Coke. The worked for a while. I had made up my mind to go into the kitchen and get a big bowl of frozen yogurt. Butter Pecan. I went to the kitchen, got my bowl and spoon and opened the freezer door. The box was light as a feather. Can we say hell no! Man I was disappointed. I was willing to suffer the joys of being lactose intolerant too! That takes commitment. There was nothing else sweet. The only things my eyes could see was frozen lean cuisines, frozen hot gods and broccoli!

Nothing sweet. Then I decided to have juice. Orange juice. Orange juice is sweet. So I poured a nice big glass and added a large tablespoon of wheat grass to it! Orange turned to green. Wheat grass. Yum! Well, the urge for sweet has gone away and the wheat grass will make me feel like I did something healthy. Well, I did. Urge to go astray on the diet averted! This time!

Native American Nike: Air Native N7

Nike unveiled Tuesday what it said is the first shoe designed specifically for American Indians, an effort aiming at promoting physical fitness in a population with high obesity rates.

The Beaverton-based company says the Air Native N7 is designed with a larger fit for the distinct foot shape of American Indians, and has a culturally specific look. It will be distributed solely to American Indians; tribal wellness programs and tribal schools nationwide will be able to purchase the shoe at wholesale price and then pass it along to individuals, often at no cost.

"Nike is aware of the growing health issues facing Native Americans," said Sam McCracken, manager of Nike's Native American Business program. "We are stepping up our commitment ... to elevate the issue of Native American health and wellness."

Nike designers and researchers looked at the feet of more than 200 people from more than 70 tribes nationwide and found that in general, American Indians have a much wider and taller foot than the average shoe accommodates. The average shoe width of men and women measured was three width sizes larger than the standard Nike shoe.

As a result, the Air Native is wider with a larger toe box. The shoe has fewer seams for irritation and a thicker sock liner for comfort.

What's My Motivation?

Okay, I just realized that in 2008 it will be my 30th high school reunion. In the past I have gone to all of them except the last one...25 years. I had gained weight and did not want to go. I have lost since then, but I do not want to go as I am now. I was a skinny mini in high school. I know it will not be possible to be that yougn whipper snapper again. We have all aged, but I want to be thin. It is now September and the reunion is normally in May of June. SO that let me know the time frame I have. I have to step up my game because I want to walk in thin and in a knock em dead evening gown! It's on. If I was not motivated before, I certainly am now.

Star Jones Admits it: Finally!

Yes she did have that bypass surgery. Finally she admits it! I wonder what took so long.

Star Jones Reynolds says in a new interview that her dramatic weight loss was due to gastric bypass surgery, and that she dodged questions about it for years because she was "scared of what people might think of me."

Reynolds, 45, says she was "intentionally evasive" when people asked how she'd dropped 160 pounds in three years. The former "View" co-host opens up about her weight loss and self-esteem issues in a first-person essay featured in the September issue of Glamour magazine, on newsstands August 7.

"Everything about me was already so public (mostly my own doing -- talk about dumb!), so of course everyone wanted to know what I had done," she writes. "I was also terrified someone would have a tragic result after emulating me without making an informed decision with her doctor."

"But the complete truth is, I was scared of what people might think of me," she continues. "I was afraid to be vulnerable, and ashamed at not being able to get myself under control without this procedure."

Weight Loss: A Mental Thing

In the battle against fat, the heroes achieve what most of us only long for -- lasting weight loss. They're so unusual, they've become the subjects of ongoing research by scientists trying to finger just what it is that makes them stand out from the rest of dieting humanity.

The project is called the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) and was created in 1993 by researchers at Brown University and the University of Colorado in the face of the well-known and defeating statistic: Ninety-five percent of dieters gain their weight back.

Registrants -- some 4,500 -- must have dropped at least 30 pounds and kept them off for a year or more, though the average member has lost twice that much and maintained it for about five years.

In one of the latest studies, Inga Treitler, Ph.D., a cultural anthropologist, and a fellow researcher intensely interviewed and observed 10 of the registrants, focusing not on what they ate or did for exercise but on how they lived -- the books they read, the photos they kept, their pets, careers, friends and hobbies -- before and after the weight loss. The question, again, was basic: What had enabled them to triumph where so many others falter?

One of Treitler's aha moments came after the study subjects took a 120-item multiple-choice questionnaire that assesses thinking styles, called the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI).

Simply put, the theory behind it goes like this: We all naturally tend to process information, solve problems and relate to others in a particular way, and such inclinations roughly correspond to four different quadrants of the brain -- two on the right, two on the left. These preferences are like mental defaults your brain automatically resorts to when evaluating the world unless otherwise prompted and most people employ some combination of quadrants.

• "A" quadrant (upper left): People who favor this area are analytical, mathematical, logical problem solvers. Drawn to statistics and the workings of machinery, they can overanalyze a situation so much they have trouble taking action.

• "B" quadrant (lower left): These people are controlled, methodical, disciplined sticklers for structure and routine. Punctual and neat, they always have a plan, timetable and calendar with appointments penciled in.

• "C" quadrant (lower right): Lower-right thinkers are emotional, spiritual and focused on people and human connection.

• "D" quadrant (upper right): "D" types are strongly visual and easily bored, attracted to new ideas, fun and risk taking.

Which quadrant makes a successful dieter?

"We found that those with the most dramatic losses scored noticeably higher in favoring 'B,' the lower left," says Treitler.

This makes sense to her, having observed many people struggling with weight. Someone inclined toward plans and routines, who sees life through methodical eyes, would be the most comfortable with the mundane details of calorie counting and portion control. She would also be more able to coolly observe herself and catalog obstacles and failings without succumbing to an emotion like self-hatred.

Breakthrough number two occurred during another study with the NWCR volunteers.

When Treitler listened to subjects' stories, something stood out. They'd all gone through an inner transformation almost like those celebrated in traditional rites of passage. Each had found a coach, mentor or guide for the journey; had pulled back and separated somewhat from his or her old environment; and then was "reborn" into a different way of life. The newly thin person became a leader rather than a follower, a change that opened the door to further goals and achievements, often in fields completely unrelated to weight loss.

One subject asked a chef at the university where he worked to develop an aggressive diet for him and dropped nearly half his body weight. Then he took a leave from his job to help start a law school in Africa and became a passionate long-distance walker and bird-watcher.

"All the subjects had incorporated some meditative element into their lives," Treitler says. "It might have been walking or yoga, but it was self time, a white space where they could disengage from the old, obsessive behavior." This transformation of identity appears crucial in keeping weight off. Without a new self who's clearly different from the old, overweight one, it's too easy to revert to former unhealthy habits.

While most of us can't remove ourselves from daily life as radically as that man who went to Africa, we can create the conditions that make rebirth possible. Based on Dr. Treitler's observations, she can suggest concrete steps to change a habit that have nothing to do with food or exercise or any other behavior you're wrestling with.

The fact is, no matter which cognitive type you are, you can "learn to shift to another mode of thinking," to "stretch" the brain quadrant boundaries in which you feel at home, says Ann Herrmann-Nehdi, CEO of Herrmann International, which developed the HBDI. So for people who have no natural inclination to be systematic and detail oriented ("B" strengths), Treitler says the goal is to build up familiarity and comfort with those approaches.

According to Herrmann-Nehdi, simple activities practiced over a period of about three weeks can bolster your inner bookkeeper. They can be done in stages, she says.

• Organize. Alphabetize your CDs. Then, a few days later, your spices. A few days after that, rearrange your closet, then your tax papers.

• Timing. Keep a time log of your daily activities and start being punctual for every appointment.

• Plan. Sit down and map out a week in advance. It's also helpful to follow a routine jogging a certain course every other day, balancing your checkbook once a week.

• Step-by-step thinking: Cook from a recipe exactly as it's written, knit from a pattern, learn a computer program by following a tutorial or manual.

If these activities seem grating, you can make them more appealing to your naturally dominant brain type, Herrmann-Nehdi says: "A 'D' [conceptual, risk taking] could dream up something she wants to achieve in a year's time, then, working backward, create a timeline and checklist of what needs to be done."

A "C"---emotional, people-oriented--- could teach her niece to balance a checkbook.

Think of these activities as physical workouts, suggests Treitler: "When you practice them regularly, it trains your brain to become accustomed to new ways of thinking." Later, when an actual diet plan requires steadfastness and attention to detail, the effort won't feel so alien.

The most important aspect of redefining yourself is "doing something empowering," says Treitler. "It may be teaching, volunteering -- anything that allows you to take on new status and to be in the position of helper rather than one who needs help." From this strengthened position, you go forward, not back.

50 Million Pound Challenge

Joining THE 50 MILLION POUND CHALLENGE means becoming part of something exciting, life-altering, historic, and tremendously beneficial! Not only for you, but to others in your family and community, as well as to future generations of African Americans.

Why Join?
Participating in The Challenge is not just about shedding those extra pounds — though that is critical to your health and well-being.
It’s about all of us coming together and looking out for each other as we work to take more control of our lives. It’s about taking the time to reach out and lock hands as we join forces to fight the very real risk that being overweight poses to ourselves, our families, and our community.

The Crisis
The number one health crisis facing not only African Americans, but all Americans, is being overweight. Two out of every three adults (66%) today are considered to be overweight, or even worse, obese. Even more troubling, 17% of all children in the U.S. are now overweight. The statistics for African Americans are even more alarming—where almost 80% of adult women and 67% of adult men are overweight. Equally worrisome is that 20% of African-American teenagers between the ages 12-19 are overweight, and this number appears to be rising.

Our teenagers are developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and in some cases, early signs of heart disease. This decline in our youths’ health can be attributed to poor diet, lack of exercise, and inadequate medical guidance.
