Fish Pedicures

I have heard it all now. Fish pedicures! Check out this article! Would you do it?

Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the D.C. area, where a
northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months. John Ho,
who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, said 5,000
people have taken the plunge so far.
"This is a good treatment for everyone
who likes to have nice feet," Ho said.
He said he wanted to come up with
something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to
scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favor with state regulators
because of concerns about whether they're sanitary.
Ho was skeptical at first
about the fish, which are called garra rufa but typically known as doctor fish.
They were first used in Turkey and have become popular in some Asian
countries.
But Ho doubted they would thrive in the warm water needed for a
comfortable footbath. And he didn't know if customers would like the idea.
"I
know people were a little intimidated at first," Ho said. "But I just said,
'Let's give it a shot.' "

Customers were quickly hooked.
Tracy Roberts, 33, of Rockville,
Maryland, heard about it on a local radio show. She said it was "the best
pedicure I ever had" and has spread the word to friends and co-workers.
"I'd
been an athlete all my life, so I've always had calluses on my feet. This was
the first time somebody got rid of my calluses completely," she said.
First
time customer KaNin Reese, 32, of Washington, described the tingling sensation
created by the toothless fish: "It kind of feels like your foot's asleep," she
said.
The fish don't do the job alone. After 15 to 30 minutes in the tank,
customers get a standard pedicure, made easier by the soft skin the doctor fish
leave behind.
Ho believes his is the only salon in the country to offer the
treatment, which costs $35 for 15 minutes and $50 for 30 minutes. The spa has
more than 1,000 fish, with about 100 in each individual pedicure tank at any
given time.
Dennis Arnold, a podiatrist who four years ago established the
International Pedicure Association, said he had never heard of the treatment and
doubts it will become widespread.
"I think most people would be afraid of
it," he said.
Customer Patsy Fisher, 42, of Crofton, Maryland, admitted she
was nervous as she prepared for her first fish pedicure. But her apprehension
dissolved into laughter after she put her feet in the tank and the fish swarmed
to her toes.
"It's a little ticklish, actually," she said.
Ho said the hot
water in which the fish thrive doesn't support much plant or aquatic life, so
they learned to feed on whatever food sources were available -- including dead,
flaking skin. They leave live skin alone because, without teeth, they can't bite
it off.
In addition to offering pedicures, Ho hopes to establish a network of
Doctor Fish Massage franchises and is evaluating a full-body fish treatment
that, among other things, could treat psoriasis and other skin ailments.
Ho
spent a year and about $40,000 getting the pedicures up and running, with a few
hiccups along the way.
State regulations make no provision for regulating
fish pedicures. But the county health department -- which does regulate pools --
required the salon to switch from a shallow, tiled communal pool that served as
many as eight people to individual tanks in which the water is changed for each
customer.
The communal pool also presented its own problem: At times the fish
would flock to the feet of an individual with a surplus of dead skin, leaving
others with a dearth of fish.

400 Calories in One Swoop!

Today I started off wrong. Pop tart! Strawberry! Frosted! 400 calories at once. Let's see if I can redeem any thing of today. What did Tara say in Gone With the Wind? There is always tomorrow!

Benefits of Olive Oil

I have always been an olive oil user when it comes to cooking. I am of the belief that it is the better oil to use. I have been using it and no other type of oil for about 8 years now. Using olive oil has been found to reduce the incidence of cancer, reduce blood pressure, aid digestion, and delay the aging process of our organs and tissues. It is also good for the heart. Olive oil plays an important role in the development of our brain with its abundance of Vitamin E. Diets rich in olive oils are common to the world's longest-living populations. That is why I love to use it. I wnat to live as long as possible. I just need to moderate the diet a LITTLE more.

When I was a little girl and we were out of hair oil...you know black hair can be very curly and tough to comb....my mother used to use olice oil to oil our hair as a substitute until she could get to the store. You had to be careful though. You could not use too much or you would ruin your clothes! Those oil stains would never come out of your collars. The hair was surprisingly soft. Still very nappy but soft. I have not used it in my hair for many years. But it is there, if I am ever in a pinch.

I was in TJ Maxx last weekend and I saw lots and lots of olive oil soap. Big, fat bars that smelled heavenly. Well, after sniffing some and thinking about it and looking at shoes and sniffing it some more, I had to get a box. It cost about $7.00 but it smells so good in the shower and the lather is rich. I tend to be dry so it feels good to my skin. I still have to use lotion....but, I think the olive oil soap make my skin feel more supple. Supposedly, skin and hair cleansed with olive oil soap retain moisture, resilience, suppleness and brightness. I think that is true. So I highly recommend olive oil soap. There is plenty around at places like TJ Maxx and I am sure at other organic stores as well.

I highly recommend olive oil. Period. It is good and will add longevity to your life. Look at how long some of the people in the Mediterrean live. How? Why? Olive oil, I am sure has something to do with it!

Kefir

I have just discovered Kefir. I was in Brazil last summer and it was served on the plane at breakfast. I tried it. I had never seen it or heard of it before. I wondered if it was Brazilian. I just thought it was a yogurt smoothie. That was what the "only portuguese flight attendent" motioned and gestured and said one word...yogurt....to get me to understand what it was. The front of the bottle was all portugese!

I was strolling down the Publi aisle last week and low and behold...there it was! Kefir. I read the label and decided to get some. It is very good and seems to be good for you. What is is exactly? Well I did have to go on line and look it up.

Kefir is a cultured, enzyme-rich food filled with friendly micro-organisms that
help balance your "inner ecosystem." More nutritious and therapeutic than
yogurt, it supplies complete protein, essential minerals, and valuable B
vitamins.
How else is it good for you?

Kefir stimulates protein digestion and appetite, decreases the cholesterol
content in blood, improves salivation, and excretion of stomach and pancreatic
enzymes and peristalsis.Kefir consumption stimulates microphage production and
improves immunity. It has a favorable effect on the resistance of humans to
catching colds and other diseases.

What is the difference between yogurt and kefir?

While both Kefir and yogurt are cultured milk products, they contain
different types of beneficial bacteria. Yogurt contains transient beneficial
bacteria that keep your digestive system clean and provide food for the friendly
bacteria that already are present. Kefir actually helps to colonize your
intestinal tract -- a feat that yogurt cannot match.

Additionally, Kefir contains several major strains of friendly bacteria
not commonly found in yogurt: Lactobacillus Caucasus, Leuconostoc, Acetobacter
species, and Streptococcus species. It also contains beneficial yeasts, such as
Saccharomyces Kefir and Torula Kefir, which help balance the intestinal flora,
including promotion of beneficial yeast in the body by penetrating the mucosal
lining. They form a virtual SWAT team that housecleans and helps strengthen the
intestines.

Kefir's active yeast and bacteria may provide more nutritive value than
yogurt by helping digest the foods that you eat and by keeping the colon
environment clean and healthy. The curd size of Kefir is smaller than yogurt, so
it's also easier to digest, making it an ideal food for babies**, the elderly,
and anyone with digestive health concerns.

Drink Kefir. I actually feel better when I drink it. Internally. I feel better and I find that amazing!

That Chocolate Time

It is again the time of chocolate. That time of month when it is all I want. For just a few days and then no more. I did eat a Nestles Crunch bar last night and felt much better. I always knew that chocolate was a vegetable! I am having lunch right now. From Subway....after that? A Mister Good Bar. Then I will be good with chocolate for awhile.

Now I need to go have another cup of coffee. I need to quiet down this caffeine headache. What would we do without chocolate and caffeine. They run the world. Just think about it!

My Food, Not Your Food

It is my food and not your food. Today I got a fruit salad before coming to work and I had it sitting at my desk while I was logging on to the computer. Of course the girl who works with me who is extremely obese walked up to me with a plate and fork and just stood at my desk looking at me. I asked her if she was there because she wanted some of my fruit. She said yes. I then opened the lid and told her to get a few pieces. It is fruit and lord knows she needs that, but, to get a plate and fork and just stand at someone's desk. How bold is that?! And another thing, she never shares her food. Not that I would really want any of it, but if she has something, she shares it very grudgingly. She will even say that people should not ask fat people for their food. They do not like to share. That is what she says to me. To me that is just being greedy.

I will have to hide my fruit the next time I bring any. It was good and I ate it all for breakfast. Now my coffee and I have caffeine and sugar to start the day!

Reducing Belly Fat

I have a little mini-me and it is my belly fat. I am waging war with it now. How to get rid of it. I see all the pills and things on the market but I am very hesitant to take anything. It is best to loose it the old fashioned way...sweat it off. On the radio, not to long ago I heard a commentary that the fat is stored in kind of in a mesh pocket of stomach muscles and that over time the only way to reduce that mesh pocket of fat is to work it off. What is the best way? Food? Pills? Targeted stomach exercises? The only way seems to be to expend more calories than you are taking in so that pocket of reserve fat in the mesh pocket will be used up. It sure got there easily and it snuck up on me. Now why is it so hard to get rid of it?

Tips on Losing Belly Fat
  1. Exercize: Get that jelly roll, rolling! Often. No more sitting around on the sofa. Get up and get moving. Join the gym. Walk at least 30 minutes a day. If you fall to temptation and do eat something sweet, then immediately walk for 30 minutes after or get on the stairmaster or eliptical trainer.
  2. Alcohol: Avoid at all costs. Beer in particular has lots of calories and will help grow your beer belly. Other alcohol like margaritis and mixed drinks have all sorts of sweet sugary sodas or heavy creams that are full of sugars, fat and calories
  3. No eating after 8 PM: This is a rule of thumb that works. No eating after 8pm as our bodies do not have time to digest all that food before we go to bed. It all just turns to fat when we go to sleep on a big full stomach of food.
  4. No Junk Food: Junk food is like fuel to belly fat. We are what we eat. If you eat chips you will be a fat potato chip. Avoid junk food at all costs. Switch to fruits and vegatables when you yearn for something weet.
  5. Eat only the Good Carbohydrates: We all need carbs but eat only the good ones. Switch to whole grain breads and avoid white bread. Again stick to fruits and vegetables and then drink them. Use the juicer. You know I am a big fan of mine.
Follow these tips and stick with it and soon that belly fat will be walking out the door. Right now what am I doing? I am getting ready to start the day. I am putting on my shoes and going walking before work. I need to shake up my mini-me. I need to let it know, it has to find another place to live.
