Too Busy Watching Others

There is a very annoying woman that I know. She gets on my last nerve. She spends her days trying to police what everyone is eating. If you happen to be at lunch with her, she is critiquing what you eat, commenting on whether you should eat it, how sweet she things it is, how many calories it is. Eating with her is not a joy. It has become something to avoid. Now she is not skinny minny.

She is all the time eating candy and trail mix and lots of carbs but somehow never looks at what she is eating. Some have tried to turn the tables and tell her that she eats all sorts of junk and that she needs to look at what she is eating. She swears that all she eats is good and nutritious. That 4 pounds of dark chocolate that she ate all by herself is just peachy!

She gets very defensive and feels that no one should look at what she eats. She just wants to constantly examine what others are eating. Maybe it is some sort of defense mechanism. Maybe she feels that she by looking at others she will feel better about herself. I do not know what, I just know that group eating out with her is a horrid experience. She takes the "j" out joy! any suggestions?

Star Jones Admits it: Finally!

Yes she did have that bypass surgery. Finally she admits it! I wonder what took so long.

Star Jones Reynolds says in a new interview that her dramatic weight loss was due to gastric bypass surgery, and that she dodged questions about it for years because she was "scared of what people might think of me."

Reynolds, 45, says she was "intentionally evasive" when people asked how she'd dropped 160 pounds in three years. The former "View" co-host opens up about her weight loss and self-esteem issues in a first-person essay featured in the September issue of Glamour magazine, on newsstands August 7.

"Everything about me was already so public (mostly my own doing -- talk about dumb!), so of course everyone wanted to know what I had done," she writes. "I was also terrified someone would have a tragic result after emulating me without making an informed decision with her doctor."

"But the complete truth is, I was scared of what people might think of me," she continues. "I was afraid to be vulnerable, and ashamed at not being able to get myself under control without this procedure."

Weight Loss: A Mental Thing

In the battle against fat, the heroes achieve what most of us only long for -- lasting weight loss. They're so unusual, they've become the subjects of ongoing research by scientists trying to finger just what it is that makes them stand out from the rest of dieting humanity.

The project is called the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) and was created in 1993 by researchers at Brown University and the University of Colorado in the face of the well-known and defeating statistic: Ninety-five percent of dieters gain their weight back.

Registrants -- some 4,500 -- must have dropped at least 30 pounds and kept them off for a year or more, though the average member has lost twice that much and maintained it for about five years.

In one of the latest studies, Inga Treitler, Ph.D., a cultural anthropologist, and a fellow researcher intensely interviewed and observed 10 of the registrants, focusing not on what they ate or did for exercise but on how they lived -- the books they read, the photos they kept, their pets, careers, friends and hobbies -- before and after the weight loss. The question, again, was basic: What had enabled them to triumph where so many others falter?

One of Treitler's aha moments came after the study subjects took a 120-item multiple-choice questionnaire that assesses thinking styles, called the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI).

Simply put, the theory behind it goes like this: We all naturally tend to process information, solve problems and relate to others in a particular way, and such inclinations roughly correspond to four different quadrants of the brain -- two on the right, two on the left. These preferences are like mental defaults your brain automatically resorts to when evaluating the world unless otherwise prompted and most people employ some combination of quadrants.

• "A" quadrant (upper left): People who favor this area are analytical, mathematical, logical problem solvers. Drawn to statistics and the workings of machinery, they can overanalyze a situation so much they have trouble taking action.

• "B" quadrant (lower left): These people are controlled, methodical, disciplined sticklers for structure and routine. Punctual and neat, they always have a plan, timetable and calendar with appointments penciled in.

• "C" quadrant (lower right): Lower-right thinkers are emotional, spiritual and focused on people and human connection.

• "D" quadrant (upper right): "D" types are strongly visual and easily bored, attracted to new ideas, fun and risk taking.

Which quadrant makes a successful dieter?

"We found that those with the most dramatic losses scored noticeably higher in favoring 'B,' the lower left," says Treitler.

This makes sense to her, having observed many people struggling with weight. Someone inclined toward plans and routines, who sees life through methodical eyes, would be the most comfortable with the mundane details of calorie counting and portion control. She would also be more able to coolly observe herself and catalog obstacles and failings without succumbing to an emotion like self-hatred.

Breakthrough number two occurred during another study with the NWCR volunteers.

When Treitler listened to subjects' stories, something stood out. They'd all gone through an inner transformation almost like those celebrated in traditional rites of passage. Each had found a coach, mentor or guide for the journey; had pulled back and separated somewhat from his or her old environment; and then was "reborn" into a different way of life. The newly thin person became a leader rather than a follower, a change that opened the door to further goals and achievements, often in fields completely unrelated to weight loss.

One subject asked a chef at the university where he worked to develop an aggressive diet for him and dropped nearly half his body weight. Then he took a leave from his job to help start a law school in Africa and became a passionate long-distance walker and bird-watcher.

"All the subjects had incorporated some meditative element into their lives," Treitler says. "It might have been walking or yoga, but it was self time, a white space where they could disengage from the old, obsessive behavior." This transformation of identity appears crucial in keeping weight off. Without a new self who's clearly different from the old, overweight one, it's too easy to revert to former unhealthy habits.

While most of us can't remove ourselves from daily life as radically as that man who went to Africa, we can create the conditions that make rebirth possible. Based on Dr. Treitler's observations, she can suggest concrete steps to change a habit that have nothing to do with food or exercise or any other behavior you're wrestling with.

The fact is, no matter which cognitive type you are, you can "learn to shift to another mode of thinking," to "stretch" the brain quadrant boundaries in which you feel at home, says Ann Herrmann-Nehdi, CEO of Herrmann International, which developed the HBDI. So for people who have no natural inclination to be systematic and detail oriented ("B" strengths), Treitler says the goal is to build up familiarity and comfort with those approaches.

According to Herrmann-Nehdi, simple activities practiced over a period of about three weeks can bolster your inner bookkeeper. They can be done in stages, she says.

• Organize. Alphabetize your CDs. Then, a few days later, your spices. A few days after that, rearrange your closet, then your tax papers.

• Timing. Keep a time log of your daily activities and start being punctual for every appointment.

• Plan. Sit down and map out a week in advance. It's also helpful to follow a routine jogging a certain course every other day, balancing your checkbook once a week.

• Step-by-step thinking: Cook from a recipe exactly as it's written, knit from a pattern, learn a computer program by following a tutorial or manual.

If these activities seem grating, you can make them more appealing to your naturally dominant brain type, Herrmann-Nehdi says: "A 'D' [conceptual, risk taking] could dream up something she wants to achieve in a year's time, then, working backward, create a timeline and checklist of what needs to be done."

A "C"---emotional, people-oriented--- could teach her niece to balance a checkbook.

Think of these activities as physical workouts, suggests Treitler: "When you practice them regularly, it trains your brain to become accustomed to new ways of thinking." Later, when an actual diet plan requires steadfastness and attention to detail, the effort won't feel so alien.

The most important aspect of redefining yourself is "doing something empowering," says Treitler. "It may be teaching, volunteering -- anything that allows you to take on new status and to be in the position of helper rather than one who needs help." From this strengthened position, you go forward, not back.

50 Million Pound Challenge

Joining THE 50 MILLION POUND CHALLENGE means becoming part of something exciting, life-altering, historic, and tremendously beneficial! Not only for you, but to others in your family and community, as well as to future generations of African Americans.

Why Join?
Participating in The Challenge is not just about shedding those extra pounds — though that is critical to your health and well-being.
It’s about all of us coming together and looking out for each other as we work to take more control of our lives. It’s about taking the time to reach out and lock hands as we join forces to fight the very real risk that being overweight poses to ourselves, our families, and our community.

The Crisis
The number one health crisis facing not only African Americans, but all Americans, is being overweight. Two out of every three adults (66%) today are considered to be overweight, or even worse, obese. Even more troubling, 17% of all children in the U.S. are now overweight. The statistics for African Americans are even more alarming—where almost 80% of adult women and 67% of adult men are overweight. Equally worrisome is that 20% of African-American teenagers between the ages 12-19 are overweight, and this number appears to be rising.

Our teenagers are developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and in some cases, early signs of heart disease. This decline in our youths’ health can be attributed to poor diet, lack of exercise, and inadequate medical guidance.

Gold Anyone?

Apparently gold isn't just for jewelery nowadays. It is edible. A company in Japan (only in Japan!) called Tsukioka Co. Ltd. sells edible gold flakes, which comes in many shapes and sizes. The company claims that by ingesting the edible pure gold, it helps to refresh the human body. How beneficial is this? I am not to very sure. Who comes up with this stuff? I know that gold is used on edible candy for weddings, cakes and special occasions. But actually beneficial? I do not know about that. Can the human body even digest it?

Other Hats

I have often wondered what it would be like to own a cooking school. Or be chef. After seeing Hell's Kitchen a time or two I realize it can be brutal. I think anything you try today can be just as hard without the proper foundation. Education and good schooling is important. To run that cooking school, you have to have a head for business and that calls for a higher education to help you achieve that goal.

Capella is an online accredited school that has a business leadership program. That cooking school does not have to be like Hell's Kitchen. There is an undergraduate and PhD program in business that can jump start your career in the business world. The good thing with Capella is that is is e-learning. You learn from the comforts of your own home when you have time to get to your computer. When you have the time, you can take classes, tests and do homework assignments. You can even communicate with the class or professors using an email system. Learning has never been so easy as it is now in our present age of technology.

The staff are truly resources as they are the best in their academic fields and they are devoted to providing the best learning opportunities available in order to help you achieve your goals. Check out Capella. There is an expansive network of counselors and advisers there to support you as you further your education.

Milestones

I just had a birthday on July 29th. I just turned 47. I am okay with the number. I do not feel like that number. I feel like I am still in my 20's. That I believe is a good thing. I got on the scale and I have lost another 3 pounds so all is well. I am heading in the right direction. I had a wonderful homemade cake made by my family. I did have a little piece. It was my birthday afterall. You can have cake on that day. Weight now? 218. I am doing the happy dance.

Just Freeze It!

You know I have the bum knee. I hurt it in college and had to have knee surgery. Exploding knee caps, no arthroscopic surgery as the pieces were too big, scarring. Therapy that was a year of going to a medieval torture chamber to break up the scar tissue. Well, since then, the knee has been okay. Sometimes it is achy when it rains or if I walk alot, then it gets achy. See? It's the offending knee!

At various times throughtout the years I have had to have physical therapy. It gets a little swollen and tends to click. Feels like things rubbing together in there. Yuk! Very uncomfortable. I have tried various things throughout the years to try on it. Now I have been sent some wonderful samples of Freeze It. I tried it. I liked it. It was cool and soothing. The texture was smooth and greaseless without staining.

Freeze It can be used for any sort of joint pain or muscular ache. I rubbed it in and waited. Soon I began to feel a warm sensation as it went to work. If you are about to workout, use it before you begin to reduce soreness. It you are already sore, rub it in and you can even use a little ice to reduce soreness as well. I fear that I may get arthritis in this knee in the future as that is what my doctor told me was a very real possibility many years ago. Freeze It will help with that as well. I can be applied up to four times a day.

I like the fact that it comes in the gel as well as a roll on. The roll on is nice when you do not want to get it all over your hands. (Tip one...don't forget you rubbed it in and then rub your eyes. Not a good combination) What is in it that does the trick? Well, camphor and menthol for one. In addition it contains a special ingredient called ILEX. That is a herbal extract from a South American holly shrub. It helps to enhance the effects of the pain relief ingredients. There is also soothing aloe and vitamin E.

Me and My badly scarred knee? Well, we are paired for life. The good thing is there are wonderful products like Freeze It that can make our life together more compatable. Knee problems like mine? I recommend Freeze It. It can really make a difference in just basic quality of life if you are suffering with life long knee problems. How did it all happen? High impact aerobics back in 1980. High impact aerobics and knee caps don't mix. But I can freeze discomfort with Freeze It! Cost: Competitve at $9.99.

Watermelon Milkshakes

This is a recipe that you most likely will not think will be good. It is the watermelon milkshake. When I tell people that I am making some they go what? Whoever heard of that? Well it is a simple recipe and it is so easy. You will not believe how good it is. I have been making these for the last 14 years. Eveyone who has ever had one just loves them.

Mix about 2 scoops of your favorite vanilla icecream in a blender with several large chunks of watermelon. Blend well. Pour the frothy, pink milkshake into a tall glass and enjoy! It does not get any better than that!

Real Gold for Anyone

I know some gold is edible but you don't have to eat it to have it. You can actually own it yourself! You can just buy gold. Since early history civilization has been enamored with gold. Now we have the capability to increase our own wealth and diversify our portfolios with gold bullion. Forms that are available are gold coins, ingots and bars. It is easy to obtain just by calling the Monex Deposit Company. You will need to have your funds ready as the transaction will be completed when you call. Bank wire and overnight delivery of checks are the payment methods.

Once the money transfer is completed, your gold will be shipped to you to keep or store. Everything is confirmed and acknowledged over the phone. The benefits of buying gold are that the prices of metals tend to remain stable even when the dollar is not, they are a safe bet in our unstable political world today and they offer profit potential in the future. Who can say no to that? Go for the gold. It will be a very wise investment.

Spa Treatments Defined: Vichy Shower

How tranquil does that look? Wow! I have not had one of these but I want to. A Vichy shower has five to seven shower heads, which pour water onto you while you're lying on a cushioned wet table. Normally it will follow a salt rub or a sugar scrub or some other sort of skin treatment. Instead of jumping up and getting in a shower to rinse off the salt or mud, you simply lie there basking in the glow of being pampered.

There is some covering to hide your important parts. But if you are fearful of showing your body, you might just have to. In the event you turn over, those wet coverings or towels might slip. Showing a little does not compare to the luxury you will feel while taking a vichy shower. Go for it!
